Month-wise Schedule for Baby Breastfeeding


When a baby is born, mother has to deal with so many new changes in her life; the most important of them being feeding her baby. There are so many people around you who are always ready with some or the other kinds of advices when it comes to breastfeeding the baby. But despite all these tips you are never sure whether you have fed your baby properly or not.

You need to stay calm and understand that you and your infant are both new in each other’s company and you both are going to learn the right ways with time. Remember you and your baby need some time to be able to develop that tuning which will set everything right. I Phase: 0-3 Months

When you have just delivered the baby, the first few days will be really a challenge. Your boobs will be paining and there will be insufficient milk. Gradually, things will start falling in place. In this phase of the first three months, you need to feed your baby after every three hours for around 20 minutes or so. Use only one breast at one time. To avoid colic, it is good to feed the baby in the evening. Remember that feeding duration can double during the night. Make sure that you feed your baby with both- the fore milk and the hind milk. To maintain that ratio you can pump out a little milk before feeding.

II Phase: 3-6 Months

You will still have some issues while feeding your baby as you will not be able to position him correctly because till now his head is not stiff. The feeding interval will again be 3-4 hours. The feeding time will reduce from 20 minutes to 10-15 minutes. It will still be longer during the night. By the end of this phase, you will become more confident and clear about feeding your baby as and when he demands the feed.

II Phase: 6 Months and Beyond

Now you can start feeding your baby with other top feeds like solids. Gradually the milk supply is going to decrease and you will be required to feed your baby on both sides so that he is full. You will not be required to feed him with your milk with same frequency as now you can also feed him with other solids.
